Grade 4 Home Connection - Literacy & Numeracy
LITERACY
Junior students highly benefit from spending 20 minutes daily reading to enhance their literacy skills. Any type of reading genre or text type that interests them most is the best plan, as their engagement levels will be up. Some students prefer to read non-fiction magazines, while others enjoy a cookbook. Many students find graphic novels exciting and there's several students who prefer short stories, traditional fictional novels, or online websites. The two keys to remember are a) ongoing exposure to text and b) discussing what they have read to extend their understanding. Under the 'Language Arts' tab is a list of awesome websites that offer reading & writing supports as well, these can be useful for students looking to build on the knowledge they are developing in class. NUMERACY
When students become confident in their mathematical abilities, the possibilities are endless of the challenging concepts they will be able to take on. Much of this self-esteem develops from their ongoing work with numbers in a variety of different contexts. In class we engage in a variety of strategies to become fluid mathematicians; including problem solving, number talks, small group mini lessons, large group consolidation of concepts, and individual practice. At home, students can access their DreamBox account to help solidify their numeracy skills. Dreambox provides individualized instruction for students guiding their practice to best suit where their performance is at a specific moment in time.
Ideally, 60 minutes of logging in a week is the target for Grade
4 students to really make a positive impact on their abilities.
